West Horsley Youth Council

West Horsley Youth Council was established in 2021by the Parish Council to give a voice to the young people of the village and to engage more with the needs of different groups in the community. Now we are a thriving group of eight councillors, organising events for families and teenagers in the village, and supporting the Parish Council in its work too. Our recent events include The Horsley Hustle Family Fun Run, an Autumn Fair and Film Night, and a Clothes Swap. We also successfully ran a Good Neighbours Challenge with the children at The Raleigh School.

The Youth Council follows local council protocol. It has a chairman, and a clerk, meets monthly with published agendas and minutes, attends and contributes to Parish Council meetings, manages a budget for its activities, and takes responsibility for all aspects of its event management, from sourcing supplies and equipment to getting volunteers on board. West Horsley Youth Council is supported/overseen by designated DBS-checked parish councillors, but the decisions the youth council makes belong to the youth councillors.

If you are interested in joining the West Horsley Youth Council in the future and are aged between 13-18 years please contact the Youth Council via the Clerk at clerk@westhorsley-pc.gov.uk or complete the application form below.

  • Are you aged 13-18?
  • Are you interested in representing the views and opinions of young people in West Horsley?
  • Would you enjoy organising campaigns and events aimed at bringing local young people together?

If so, then we need you!

Our Youth Council’s main objectives are:

  • to give a voice to the young people of our village on decisions which directly affect them
  • to create opportunities for local young people to get together and to enjoy the facilities on offer to them in West Horsley.

The Council is structured in a similar way to a Parish Council, with a chairman and clerk. It meets regularly, has task groups that lead on specific campaigns and events, and provides opportunities for all councillors to gain management, team-working and leadership skills. Recent Youth Council events include a Youth Tennis Tournament, a Photography Competition, and a Youth Movie Night. The Council is assisting the Parish Council's Climate Change and Communications Task Groups to reach residents of all ages. It also represents the voice of the young people of West Horsley at Parish Council and other community events.

Being a Youth Councillor is not only a fun way to make a difference in your community. It is also a great way to gain 'work' experience, and will be an interesting addition to your CV when applying for jobs, and to your personal statement if you decide to go to university.

If you are interested in being a part of our Youth Council, then please download and complete the application form and email it to our clerk at clerk@westhorsley-pc.gov.uk.
